EASTER HUNT
A church in the next town over hosted a community Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday morning. In a little town like this, you participate in every activity, because otherwise, you'd do nothing! But Jared was sick, having asthma attacks and coughing 'til he almost threw up. But there was no way he was staying home when there were Easter eggs to be hunted! So we hauled everyone over to Wellington. First they had a story and then divided kids into three groups by age. The group for 1-4 year olds got to go pick up eggs in the preschool playground. My mom took Zach and I went with Jared.
First thing, Jared tripped and fell. He was already tired and cranky from being sick, and falling was the last straw. He said that someone had tripped him, and was so hurt that someone would be so mean. He just cried. I tried to be understanding, but this is a pattern. We go to do something fun, and he is all pumped up about it, but the moment it starts, he throws a tantrum, cries, and refuses to participate. I sat him on a chair with his Easter basket and let him cry while I hurried to see Zach get an egg or two before the whirlwind hunt ended. A few kids took pity on him and put three eggs in his basket so he didn't end up empty-handed.
Zach did great, and got about a dozen eggs. When the eggs were gone, he decided to try out the playground equipment. That's when he started crying, because we had to go back inside to empty the candy into our baskets and give back the eggs. He cried until we were a few miles out of Wellington.
Sometimes I wonder why I even try, but really, we just need to get out and do things more often. Then Jared would be used to doing things and Zach wouldn't fret that he'd better make the most of every opportunity.
