YOU'RE A MEAN ONE, MR. GRINCH
This morning we worked hard, mopping and vacuuming and sucking all the bugs out of our chandelier (that was obviously not on the check-out list for the last tenants.) We moved some boxes and tidied our rooms.
Then the boys trashed the family room and refused to pick up their toys. I am fed up with their dragging it out for hours on end, so I set the timer for 10 minutes and told the boys that after the timer rang, the Grinch was going to come and take away all the toys that were left on the floor. Jared leaned against the couch the entire time, telling me that he didn't believe me, and anyway, at the end of the movie, the Grinch turned nice and gave back all the toys. He still thinks he got the better end of the deal. I cleaned up the family room for him, and he thinks he'll get his toys back tomorrow. NOT gonna happen!
Seriously, they didn't pick up a single toy. Zach really didn't get it, because he started helping me fill up the big black garbage bag. I filled up two, plus a giant Mega Blocks tub, and locked them in the spare room. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them now, because I'm trying to clean that room out, but the family room looks AWESOME!
I'm open for any and all ideas to help my boys "get" it. Jared was just playing me, I know. He acts like he doesn't care about the punishment, which completely strips me of all power. I'm hoping that missing his toys for months on end will help it sink in.
Ryan got home in the afternoon, and wasn't frozen solid! The chewy granola bars he'd taken were frozen solid, though. Jared wanted one, but couldn't bite through it until it warmed up!

This one made me laugh because it happened to me a long time ago too. It is true - they strip you of power with the uncaring attitude.
For me it was my 2 girls who shared a room and just could not put their toys away. They were about 6 and 3 and I did the same thing. Put all the toys in the bag and told them they couldn't have them for a week, thinking they would miss them. Guess what? They never did. They continued to play with what was left in their room (the toys that had not been all over the floor). We eventually put that big 'ol bag up in the attic and they never did get it back, and they never did miss it.
Now we laugh about it. Someday I'll open it up when I have grandkids.
Good luck:)
My mom and dad did this to me and my sister once when we were about 4 yrs and 5 yrs old. I guess that I started getting worried when my mom started putting our toys in a garbage bag, but my big sister Rachel told me "It's okay Jessica, we have a lot more toys."
Kids are too darn smart. We've done this with Matt, but it happened to be his all time favourite toy: his magnitexts.
Since the boys don't care about the toys, take something else away that they really like. For example: Matt loves playing video games with Travis. So if his toys were not picked up, no video games for the weekend!
Hit them where it hurts, they'll get the message loud and clear.
