My sophomore year of college was awesome. I lived with my freshman dorm roommate, Bonnie, and 4 other girls who were just luck-of-the-draw. Two were pretty much psycho (literally), and the other two were what made that year awesome.
Anna is a crazy Swedish girl (well, she was the first in her family to be born here in the U.S.) and Kami was a crazy small-town Utah girl. In this case, crazy is a good thing.
Bonnie, Anna, Kami and I liked being crazy together. Anna and I took a guitar class together and it was sooo fun! So we used to sing all the time. Bonnie is a good soprano, so she would join us. And Kami? Well, Kami wouldn't be left out of the fun!
The problem is, she was tone deaf.
Oh, she sang with all her heart, and cracked us up constantly. It just wasn't pretty. Strangely, she looked exactly like Allison Krauss. We were all hanging out together and listening to her album one night. I turned it over to look at the song list and froze, because there was my roommate on the back cover! Same haircut and everything. We started calling her Kami Krauss. In fact, it took me several days of brain-wracking to remember her real last name!

I found this photo of Allison Krauss online and emailed it to Bonnie and Anna this week. They both thought it was Kami! I tried to find a photo of Kami so you could compare, but I can't find anything in my house right now, much less old college photos.
None of us were talented dancers, but that didn't stop Kami from dancing, either. She was awesome. She'd bound around our apartment gracefully, then strike a ballet pose while desperately trying to hold a straight face. We laughed until we hurt.
We joked that we would start a band called "Tickle Me Elmo" (1996 was the year there were fights over that stupid toy at Christmas). Anna and I would play guitar, and Bonnie would sing lead. But poor Kami was relegated to "back up dancer."
Last time I heard anything about her, she'd gone back to her hometown and gotten married. That was 10 years ago, I'd bet.
If anyone knows a crazy Kami Palmer from Toelle who looks just like Allison Krauss, please send her my way!

I used a writing prompt as a jumping-off point for this post.
If you like to write, why don't you try it, too? This week's prompt is: Why even sing? Write about a time when people were singing badly.
