We found a cool lap desk at DI last week. Jared decided to keep it in the car, and has stocked its side compartments with lots of books. It helped that we found a box of books we hadn't seen in a while.
On Saturday, he read 'Twas the Night before Christmas" while we were driving somewhere. It was perfect, because I know it pretty well by heart, so I could help him when he got stuck on words like "kerchief" and "lawn" and "arose." He really didn't get stuck on very many words. I may have listed all of them (he didn't get to the part about the dry leaves before a hurricane meeting with an obstacle mount to the sky---does anyone even know what tha
t part means?)
He said his favorite part was, "Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutter and threw up the sash" because he could read all those words by himself. And let me tell you, he flew through them, reading like a pro.
That night, we read one of our favorite bedtime books, Five Monkeys Make a Birthday cake. I usually read it, but lately, Jared has been taking over. And Saturday night, it was sooo funny because he reads it so well that he has started doing the voices. I was shocked when he read, "One monkey whispered" and then dropped his voice to a whisper to continue, "Don't wake up Mama!" He also sniffed when he read, "One monkey sniffed, 'It's not a fire, we ruined Mama's birthday cake.'"
Ryan just got a long-awaited camcorder, so we'll have to catch him reading on video. It's so fun! I wonder how many kids in his kindergarten class will be reading when they start this Fall. I hope there are enough that he won't be bored while they learn letter sounds!

He is doing awesome! I know I was talking to some friends with kids in kindergarten. They really do not expect much. And they take a long time on each letter. Hopefully he will enjoy the social part of it enough to have fun and not get bored. He is a smarty pants! And a cute one at that.
