Need Advice

Turns out I did a bad thing by buying goldfish for the boys. I had a sneaky suspicion that the Wal-mart fish guy didn't really know what he was talking about.

I looked up the water-changing procedure for fish bowls online, and every web site says that goldfish "generate too much waste" to live in an aquarium without a filter. That bucks all my life experience, but we haven't had the fish a week yet, and their water is foul! I replaced 75% of the water (it says to only do 20%) and it's still nasty.

It looks like to keep the tank clean, I will have to dump out the fish, dissemble the unit (including gravel and fake plants) and scrub/rinse everything TWICE A WEEK.

Sorry, not gonna happen. Wouldn't be prudent.

All recommendations say to get a betta. Then I'd have to take the tank apart ONCE a month, not EIGHT TIMES a month. I like that idea better.

So does anyone want free goldfish? Or know of a good way to get rid of them without actually flushing or killing them?

Give them to someone with an outdoor pond... Or someone with horses. Dustin's dad has several goldfish in their horse troughs and they help keep the trough clean (I guess...). Plus, they freeze with the water in the winter, and then come back to life in the spring. Odd.

Ha ha, I know a few people who have outdoor ponds. They could wake up to some goldfish one morning!

I did know that about horse troughs, being a horse nut and all. They eat the algae and keep it from scumming over. I think it would be harder to slip them unknowingly into a horse trough, though.

And of course, they cost 28 cents, so it's not like I'd be doing anyone a favor by giving them a valuable fish.

Leave it in there for few more days and it will die on its own!

We bought Trent a little fish tank for Christmas. It even has a little filter but it is cheap. We had 3 goldfish die before we bought a Beta. It has been doing just fine. Good luck!
