POTTY TRAINING IN A DAY
I heard about this method of potty training and thought it sounded interesting. I don't think it will really get Zach totally potty trained in one day, but I think it's a great idea to kick off potty training with a big day of intense training. Also, we're not following any book. I found the basic information on Dr. Phil.com. I didn't want to buy a doll that wets, and I also don't think Zach's into having a superhero call him. Getting to call Daddy will work just fine for him.
For my own record, and for anyone who want to see how this goes, I'm going to post how our day goes:
We started at about 10 am. I explained that Zach would get a sticker (we found a book of CARS stickers at the dollar store) every time he sat on the potty seat, and that he'd get a chocolate chip or dried strawberry (out of Special K Red Berries) every time he went pee pee or poop on his potty seat. I took off his diaper (he'll remain naked on the bottom today) and sat him on the potty and read a book for a minute. Not surprisingly, nothing happened.
I set the timer for 20 minutes and took him to the potty when it rang. In those 20 minutes, I also got him a drink. He's not a chugger like Jared, so I have to keep handing him his cup. He'll take a sip and put it down again. But drinking a lot is key! Again, nothing happened.
  • Zach was sitting on my lap (I was worried, and had a big towel in between us) when he said, "Need go potty! On potty seat!" So we hurried to the bathroom and he did it! Jared helped me do the Cougar fight song cheer for him. Then he chose a sticker and a strawberry (those were Jared's favorite potty training favorite, too) and we called Daddy at work.
  • I set the timer again, but before it went off, Zach went in the bathroom by himself. I thought he went to read a book or something, but he came out and announced, "Mommy, see I did my potty training!" So I went and looked, and there was a tiny bit of liquid in the pot. More cheering, more stickers, more strawberries.
  • I set the timer. When it went off, he sat on the potty with no success.
  • But a few minutes later (we're at 11:45 now), he went in the bathroom by himself. He called to me, "I did it!" So I went in there and he was standing at the toilet with his hand ready to flush. He'd peed, then poured the pot into the toilet, and put it back! (There was evidence to confirm this.)
  • It's 12:15 and this time, he peed, dumped, and flushed before he said, "I did it!" He's only peeing about a tablespoon at a time, but he sure is going often! I'm not exactly sure how to get him to save it up a little. When Jared peed the first time, he had the pot half-way full! Maybe it's because he's a chugger.
  • Wow. It's 12:20 and he just went again. This time I went with him. He was not sitting, he was standing! He leaned over the potty seat and I have to say he's got pretty good aim! I mean, this is his first day of ever going in the potty seat, and 2 hours into it, he tries it standing?
  • 2:00 is nap time. Nothing since 12:20, despite three attempts. Maybe he's not drinking enough! He's wearing a Pull-up now. But only because I got a bag of them at a yard sale for $1. We never used them for Jared.
  • 5:00 pm Zach wakes up with a wet Pull-up. Cranky and cuddly. We put on underwear because he hasn't had an accident all day. He told me at 5:30 that he needed to "go to bafwoom" but nothing happened.
  • 6:20 we're eating dinner, almost done, and Zach peed large quantities all over his booster seat and the chair and the floor.
  • 7:00 Zach was playing outside naked and peed on the deck. As Ryan says, dilution is the solution to pollution, so we poured a gallon jug of water on it and called it good. Then I put the potty seat out there with him. He used next time.
  • 7:20 Time for a movie night. Potty seat turned recliner, and Zach sat on it the whole time. Several stickers were awarded.
  • 9:00 Time for bed and a diaper. He was confused about the diaper, but we had a talk and he decided he didn't want to go pee in his bed.

This seems to be going really well! I'm very happy so far! I'll be adding more to the list as it occurs.

This is kind of funny. As I was searching online for a picture of our potty seat (see above), I discovered that it has been recalled! A whole year ago. I guess the orange paint on Tigger has too much lead in it. Honestly, I'm not too worried because I don't let my kids lick their potty seat.

Good job! That is awesome! I wish Caden's experience was as good. :) We have that same potty seat. Who knew it was recalled. LOL I can just imagine some kid chewing on their potty seat. Ewwww! :)

Wow! That is awesome! I recently heard of the potty training in a day theory and thought it would be so cool if it really worked.

When my kids were little I always wished there was like a potty training camp I could send them too. ha ha Send them in diapers and they come back trained! Wishful thinking.

Good luck - It sounds like it's going good:)
