CHRISTMAS GIFT COLLISION
I stopped by BYU Bookstore.com back in October, and noticed a photo competition they were holding. It was supposed to be a Halloween photo with a BYU theme. The prize? A football autographed by Bronco Mendenhall and the current football team. I just knew I had to win it for Ryan! So I dug out old photos of Jared in his little cougar costume and later dressed as a BYU football player for our ward Halloween party a few years back (Zach went as the cougar that year).
Well, I didn't win first prize, but they sent me a cool honorable mention prize, a DVD about the football team. I hid it in the Christmas Gift Hiding Spot and smiled to myself about winning something so cool for Ryan.
On Christmas, Ryan made all the appropriate sounds for how excited he was to have the DVD. I didn't tell him how I came to own it. Later that day, he said, "that was tricky how you swiped that DVD from the mail and wrapped it for me. I'd totally forgotten that I ordered it a few months back!"
"What? No, I won it for you in a BYU Bookstore contest!" I said, feeling that my achievment was rapidly losing meaning.
"Oh, well, I ordered one way back this Fall. They were offering a free copy to all alumni," he replied.
Great. So I'm thinking that this is some lame thing that BYU gives to anyone who will take it. But Ryan seemed to enjoy watching it, anyway.
A few days later, a package came in the mail; the DVD that Ryan had ordered from the alumni. At least it proved that I really had won my copy, and it's the thought that counts, right?
