Jared's Birthday Party

Jared's party was on Saturday. He invited four boys and two girls, but neither of the girls could come.

He wanted a Lego party! We thought it was funny that his friends had had Lego parties before. They all love Legos! Maybe that's why they're all going to his math & science magnet school.

I gave Jared four Legos in the sizes I could make from a cake, and he put this together:

Then I made this:

You never realize how un-square a cake is until you're trying to make perfectly square (as in 90 degree angles) Legos. And you also don't realize how un-round marshmallows are, all squished in a bag, until you need them to make the perfectly round bumps on top of a Lego cake. I really imagined it turning out much better than this. But we only had to please a bunch of 5- & 6-year olds, and that mission was accomplished.

The boys built with Legos at the kitchen table while they waited for everyone to arrive. Then they tried to keep a bunch of balloons off the floor as long as they could. After cake and ice cream, they opened gifts. Then we made foam bookmarks with foam stickers (a last-minute craft I pulled together).
Poor Jared caught a cold on his birthday, and wasn't feeling too well at his party. So while all the healthy boys ran outside to play on the swing set, Jared played with his new toys. His guests gradually came back in to play with the toys, too, until their moms came to get them.

I think everyone had a great time. It was fun to have Grandpa Lancaster here for it, and Dad was great at playing with a bunch of boys!

Happy Birthday, Jared! I think Legos are a huge hit with kids (especially the boys) at this age. Matt is crazy for them as are all of his friends :)

So fun and what a good idea with the lego cake!
